This course focuses on introducing and developing listening, speaking, reading and essay writing skills necessary for success in GUST undergraduate courses. Utilizing the lecture method, pair work, group activities, and student-instructor conferences, the student will engage with academically-oriented texts, lectures, and other materials to extend reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency.
The student will analyze, summarize, paraphrase, and synthesize information taken from a variety of sources to plan and deliver a formal presentation of 4-6 minutes with visual aids and engage in paired interactive topic discussions. Under the close supervision of the instructor and using the workshop method, the student will follow a process based approach to plan, revise, and edit short four paragraph informative essays of 1-2 pages. In both in and out-of-class activities, the student is guided through methods of appropriately extending and supporting written and spoken ideas.

Program length depends on placement and progression.
A placement test is given to each new student before they begin their course of study to evaluate the appropriate level of instruction. The length of instruction depends on the results of the placement exam.

In order to provide students and all stake holders with a clear interpretation of the grading scale above, the following achievement scales were created for ENGL 097 and ENGL 098. The achievement scales clearly indicate the degree to which students have attained the student learning outcomes by skill area at the end of Levels 1 & 2 as a result of instruction.
Progression from ENGL 097 to the ENGL 098 is determined at the end of each term. Students are assessed throughout the term, and promotion is confirmed using the following criteria:
ENGL 097 – Level 1 Low Intermediate Students entering EFU with CEFR level A1 to A2 and who pass at 70% of course total score or above should be able to demonstrate the following:
Progression from ENGL 098 to the ENGL 100 is determined at the end of each term. Students are assessed throughout the term, and promotion is confirmed using the following criteria:
ENGL 098 – Level 2 Intermediate Students entering EFU with CEFR level low B1 and who pass at 70% of course total score or above should be able to demonstrate the following:
