Program Components


Listening
Listening
Students will practice applying essential interactive listening strategies to actively analyze a variety of low intermediate real-world multi-paragraph spoken texts such as lectures, discussions, debates, and interviews. Students will also practice identifying purpose, main ideas, and important details.
Vision
Reading
Students will practice applying essential reading comprehension strategies to actively analyze a variety of written real-world multi-paragraph texts at the low-intermediate level. Students will also practice identifying the communicative purpose, main ideas, and important details of a text or a section of a text.
Goals
Writing & Speaking
Students will practice following a process based approach to plan, revise, and edit written & spoken work in order to produce presentations at the low intermediate level with an introduction, a body and a conclusion & developing their spoken & written ideas by integrating their personal experiences, observations, opinions.

Course Description


ENGL 097 - English as a Second Language Level 1.00 [20-5-0]
Prerequisite(s): (TOEFL iBT 39-52), (IELTS 4.0-4.5).

This course focuses on introducing and developing listening, speaking, reading and essay writing skills necessary for success in GUST undergraduate courses. Utilizing the lecture method, pair work, group activities, and student-instructor conferences, the student will engage with academically-oriented texts, lectures, and other materials to extend reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency.

The student will analyze, summarize, paraphrase, and synthesize information taken from a variety of sources to plan and deliver a formal presentation of 4-6 minutes with visual aids and engage in paired interactive topic discussions. Under the close supervision of the instructor and using the workshop method, the student will follow a process based approach to plan, revise, and edit short four paragraph informative essays of 1-2 pages. In both in and out-of-class activities, the student is guided through methods of appropriately extending and supporting written and spoken ideas.

KITE® post-test required. Credit earned cannot be used for graduation.

ENGL 098 - English as a Second Language Level 2.00 [20-0-0]
Prerequisite(s): (TOEFL iBT 53-60), (IELTS 5.0-5.5), or ENGL 097

This course focuses on refining listening, speaking reading and essay writing skills necessary for success in GUST undergraduate courses. Utilizing the lecture method, pair work, group activities, and student-instructor conferences, the student will engage with academically-oriented texts, lectures, and other materials to extend reading and listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and fluency.

The student will analyze, summarize, paraphrase, and synthesize information taken from a variety of sources to plan and deliver a formal presentation of 5-7 minutes with visual aids and engage in paired interactive topic discussions. Under the close supervision of the instructor and using the workshop method, the student will follow a process based approach to plan, revise, and edit four to five paragraph informative and persuasive essays of 2 pages.

In both in and out-of-class activities, the student is guided through methods of appropriately extending and supporting written and spoken ideas.

KITE® post-test required. Credit earned cannot be used for graduation

Program Length


Program length depends on placement and progression.

A placement test is given to each new student before they begin their course of study to evaluate the appropriate level of instruction. The length of instruction depends on the results of the placement exam.

Gulf University for Science and Technology English Foundation Unit is accredited by the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation for the period August 2018 through August 2028 and agrees to uphold the CEA Standards for English Language Programs and Institutions. CEA is recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency for English language programs and institutions in the U.S.

In order to provide students and all stake holders with a clear interpretation of the grading scale above, the following achievement scales were created for ENGL 097 and ENGL 098. The achievement scales clearly indicate the degree to which students have attained the student learning outcomes by skill area at the end of Levels 1 & 2 as a result of instruction.

ENGL 097 Level Progression

Progression from ENGL 097 to the ENGL 098 is determined at the end of each term. Students are assessed throughout the term, and promotion is confirmed using the following criteria:

  • Student must have a minimum overall average grade of 70% for course work and common assessments.
  • Student should meet the minimum requirement for the next level (Main Flight ≥ 350 on TAKEKITE Test: an adaptive and objective, multiple-choice examination that tests grammar, reading, and listening and ≥ 350 on KITE Writing).
  • Student who does not have an overall course average of 70% will be required to repeat the level.

ENGL 097 Achievement Scale

ENGL 097 – Level 1 Low Intermediate Students entering EFU with CEFR level A1 to A2 and who pass at 70% of course total score or above should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Reading and Vocabulary:
    Students will demonstrate comprehension of low intermediate level (CEFR A2+ to low B1) multi-paragraph written texts by identifying the purpose, main ideas, and important details of a text. They will demonstrate recognition of the correct meaning of general and academic low-intermediate level vocabulary by placing it accurately in context.
  • Listening and Vocabulary:
    Students will demonstrate comprehension of low intermediate level (CEFR A2+ to low B1) passages (lectures, discussions, debates, and interviews) by identifying and inferring the topic, purpose, main ideas, and important details. They will demonstrate recognition of the correct meaning of general and academic low-intermediate level vocabulary by placing it accurately in context.
  • Writing and Grammar:
    Students will respond to a prompt appropriately by producing simple, coherent 4-paragraph informative academic essays with an introduction, body, and conclusion (CEFR A2+ to low B1). Students will adequately support their ideas by integrating their experiences, observations, and recommending a relevant course of action. They will produce mostly simple and some limited complex language with reasonable accuracy as well as use common connectors and transitions.
  • Speaking:
    Students will demonstrate presentation skills and spoken fluency by planning and delivering a timed, informative, academic presentation of 4-6 minutes using platform and organizational skills. Students will also produce relevant and coherent responses to on-demand interactive topic discussions on familiar and general topics with peers and instructors in an academic setting. They will produce language to ask for clarifications, agree, disagree, take turns, and offer recommendations towards a course of action.

ENGL 098 Level Progression

Progression from ENGL 098 to the ENGL 100 is determined at the end of each term. Students are assessed throughout the term, and promotion is confirmed using the following criteria:

  • Student must have a minimum overall average grade of 70% for course work.
  • Student should meet the minimum requirement for the next level (Main Flight ≥ 395 on TAKEKITE Test: an adaptive and objective, multiple-choice examination that tests grammar, reading, and listening and ≥ 395 on KITE Writing).
  • Student who does not have an overall average of 70% for course work will be required to repeat the level.

ENGL 098 Achievement Scale

ENGL 098 – Level 2 Intermediate Students entering EFU with CEFR level low B1 and who pass at 70% of course total score or above should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Reading and Vocabulary:
    Students will demonstrate comprehension of intermediate level (CEFR B1+ to low B2) multi-paragraph written texts by identifying and inferring the purpose, main ideas, and important details of a text. They will demonstrate recognition of the correct meaning of general and academic intermediate vocabulary by placing it accurately in context.
  • Listening and Vocabulary:
    Students will demonstrate comprehension of intermediate level (CEFR B1+ to low B2) passages (lectures, discussions, debates, and interviews) by identifying and inferring the topic, purpose, main ideas, and important details. They will demonstrate recognition of the correct meaning of general and academic intermediate level vocabulary by placing it accurately in context.
  • Writing and Grammar:
    Students will respond to a prompt appropriately by producing coherent 5-paragraph informative & persuasive academic essays with an introduction, body, and conclusion (CEFR B1+ to low B2). Students will adequately support their ideas by integrating their experiences, observations, and opinions as well as recommending and/or predicting a relevant course of action. They will produce a range of simple and complex language with reasonable accuracy as well as use less common connectors and transitions.
  • Speaking:
    Students will demonstrate presentation skills and spoken fluency by planning and delivering a timed, persuasive, academic presentation of 5-7 minutes using platform and organizational skills. Students will also produce relevant and coherent responses to on-demand interactive topic discussions on general and limited abstract topics with peers and instructors in an academic setting. They will ask relevant follow up questions and produce language to ask for clarifications, agree, disagree, take turns, interrupt politely, and offer predictions and recommendations towards a course of action.
